Federico Longo was born in Rome. He began his studies of composition and piano with Robert W. Mann and continued on at the Accademia Musicale Pescarese with Donato Renzetti. After completing his studies and earning a Diploma in Fine Arts in Pescara, he enrolled at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna where he received an additional Diploma in conducting.

In 1996, Federico Longo was appointed to the position of personal assistant to conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti. He completed his studies in conducting at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena with distinction and conducted the entire series of student graduation recitals in Siena as well as at the Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan. The Accademia Chigiana honored him with an honorary degree for his exceptional achievement during 2003.

As Gianluigi Gelmetti's assistant, he worked with the premier orchestras of the world: Milan -La Scala, Tokio - NHK, Munich -Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Paris-National Orchestra of France, Lyon -National Orchestra of Lyon, Frankfort - Radio - and Symphonic -orchestra, Festival . Orchestra of Budapest and so forth. At the same time he worked internationally on opera productions with Gianluigi Gelmetti: London - Covent Garden "Othello" by Rossini and "La Rondine" by Puccini, Geneva - Grand Theatre "Semiramis" by Rossini, Venice - La Fenice "Maria de Rohanne" by Donizetti, Genoa - Carlo Felice "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart,
Rome- Opera di Roma "The Barber of Seville" by Rossini, "The Flame" by Respighi, "The Juggler of Notre Dame" by Massenet, "The Swallow" by Puccini,"The Magic Flute" and "Don Giovanni" by Mozart.

Together with the pianist Ana-Marija Markovina, Federico Longo recorded the Mozart piano concertos in D minor and C minor for the record label Marc Aurel using SACD technology. And for the label "Genuin" he recorded music by C.Ph.E. Bach.

Federico Longo is regularly invited to perform with the most important orchestras in Italy and abroad; the Toscanini Orchestra in Parma, the Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, the Orchestra dell'Opera di Roma, the Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, the Saxonian Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, the Robert - Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra, the Romanian Radio Chamber Orchestrain in Bucharest, the Filarmonica Banatul Timisoara, the Sofia Soloists, the the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

In July 2004 he conducted "Eugene Onegine" by Tchaikowsky at the Opera Theatre of Chemnitz. After that he was invited to realize a new production by the choreography of Thorsten Haendler of Tchaikowsky's ballet "The Sleeping Beauty".

He performed his Australian debut in April 2003, during a series of "Master Series Concerts" in Sydney's Opera House with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In April 2004 he conducted music by Varèse and Scelsi in the festival "The Shock of the New". Since then, he has returned to conduct numerous concerts and recording sessions for the ABC. He conducted in October 2005 in the "Meet the Music" series an Australian premiere by Gordon Kerry and Beethoven's violin concerto with Cho-Liang Lin, which was broad casted live.

As a fervent supporter of contemporary music Federico is often invited to perform world premieres of new operas: e.g. two operas by Marco Betta which made use of texts by Andrea Camilleri within the framework of the 60th anniversary of the Siena Festival of Music, "Il Principe Granchio" by Paolo Furlani at the Teatro Communale di Modena etc. The last highlights have been his debut in the "Berliner Philharmonie" and the new production of the Opera "Saul" by Flavio Testi at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, which has been received enthusiastically by the public as well as by critics.
